Margaret Horton Apgar, Principal

Margaret Apgar

I provide Outside General Counsel Services to entrepreneurs and growing companies.

My legal practice is focused on helping small to medium size businesses make strategic decisions that grow their shareholder value by combining sound legal advice with business insight. Understanding your business needs and goals and integrating that information as part of your legal representation is my primary goal. I listen first, assess your goals and risks, and then work with you to develop strategies that fit the legal solutions into your business objectives.

My ability to find leverage points and my creative drafting skills are key value adds to the transactional services I provide. I do not practice with a “check the box” mentality. I look at each transaction as an opportunity to counsel my clients in order to obtain the best deal for their company. I help formulate strategies and initiatives that are in line with business goals, and focus negotiations on the terms that most directly impact the company while also nurturing the business relationships that surround the transaction.

I counsel my clients through many different business transactions such as:

  • corporate restructures
  • dispositions and acquisitions of significant assets
  • mergers and acquisitions
  • asset protection
  • entity formation and organizational issues
  • negotiating and documenting financial transactions
  • intellectual property matters and real estate transactions.

At any stage of my clients’ development, acting as Outside General Counsel, I advise my clients on the legal matters that are critical to their business.  My clients often rely on me to provide daily strategic legal advice on all aspects of their business touching all departments, such as:

  • operational issues
  • contract strategies
  • intellectual property matters
  • labor and employment issues
  • conflict and litigation management

My clients know they can call me with any question no matter how small or how complex and I will provide the counsel they need to make informed decisions.

As a fellow business owner, I know the obstacles that face new or growing companies.

My personal experience in starting and managing my own law firms has given me deep insight and valuable knowledge into how to achieve success. That business insight and knowledge are just part of the value that I bring to my clients.

Before I founded Apgar Firm, I practiced in the premier boutique law firms Shields Legal Group, P.C. and Friedman & Feiger, LLP and was also a founder and principal of  Diamond | Apgar, LLP, where I practiced business law, outside general counsel services, commercial and civil litigation, intellectual property, real estate, and transportation law.

I attended the University of Texas at Austin School of Law and received my J.D. in 2002.  My B.A. degree is from The College of The Holy Cross, where I graduated cum laude.  I am licensed to practice law in Texas and in the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Eastern Districts of Texas.

I am also an active member of several professional organizations, including the Dallas Bar Association, the Dallas Bar Foundation, Dream Team Women’s Network, the St. Thomas More Society, CREW Dallas, Lakewood Women in Business, North Dallas/Park Cities Women in Business, and the Association for Corporate Growth, including its Women’s Council.

Please let me know how I may help your company grow, navigate transitions, increase shareholder value and decrease risk.  I can be reached at 214-707-2791 (mobile) or email me.
